S614. Read the table of cardinals, ordinals, and numeral adverbs in 756. Commit the first twelve in each column to memory, and review the declension of εἶσ, δύο, τρεῖς, and τέτταρες in 757.

S615. VOCABULARY.
ἀποτέμνω, cut off, intercept.
ἐγκέφαλος, ου, ὁ, (compare κεφαλή), brain; of the palm tree, crown, cabbage.
ἐξοπλισίᾱ, ᾱς, ἡ, (compare ὁπλίζω), state of being armed; ἐν τῇ ἐξοπλιστίᾳ, under arms.
ἐσθίω (ἐσθι, ἐδ, φαγ), ἔδομαι, ἔφαγον, ἐδήδοκα, ἐδήδεσμαι, ἠδέσθην, eat, live on.
κεφαλή, ῆς, ἡ, head.
Κρής, Κρητός, ὁ, a Cretan.
ὁράω (ὁρα, ἰδ, ὀπ), ὄψομαι, εἶδον, ἑόρᾱκα and ἑώρᾱκα, ἑώρᾱμαι and ὦμμαι, ὤφθην, see, in its widest sense, behold, look, observe, perceive.
ὀφείλω (ὠφελ),ὀφειλήσω, ὠφείλησα, and ὤφελον, ὠφείληκα, ὠφειλήθην, owe; pass, be due.
ποῦ, interrogative adverb, where?
προσέρχομαι, come on or up, approach.

1. ἱππέᾱς δὲ εἴκοσιν ἤγαγε, καὶ προσελθὼν ἠρώτησε ποῦ ἂν ἴδοι τοὺς στρατηγούς.
    ἴδοι - He said, ποῦ ἂν ἴδοιμι, where can I see? The second aorist indicative of ὁράω is εἶδον, subjunctive ἴδω, optative ἴδοιμι, etc.

2. τετάρτῃ δ᾽ ἡμέρᾳ ἔφυγον εἰς χωρίον ἰσχῡρόν.

3. καὶ τοῖς στρατιώταις ὠφείλετο μισθὸς πλέον ἠ τριῶν μηνῶν.
    πλέον - Used indeclinably for πλεονων.

4. ἢν γὰρ ἅπαξ δύο ἠ τριῶν ἠμερῶν ὁδὸν ἀπόσχωμεν, οὐκέτι οἱ πολέμιοι ἡμῖν ἕψονται.
    ὁδὸν - Accusative of extent of space (836).

5. οὕτω δὴ στρατηγοὶ πέντε ἀποτμηθέντες τὰς κεφαλὰς ἐτελεύτησαν.
    ἀποτμηθέντες τὰς κεφαλὰς having been beheaded. The active construction would be ἀποτενω τινι (861) τὴν κεφαλην; the passive, ἀποτεμνεται τίς τὴν κεφαλην, has his head cut off.

6. καὶ ἐξελαύνει σταθμοὺς τρεῖς παρασάγγᾱς εἴκοσι καὶ δύο ἐπὶ τὸν Μαίανδρον ποταμόν· τούτον ἦν τὸ εὖρος δύο πλέθρα.

7. καὶ ἧκε Κλέαρχος ὁ Λακεδαιμόνιος φυγὰς ἔχων ὁπλίτᾶς χῑλίους καὶ πελταστὰς Θρᾷκας ὀκτακοσίους καὶ τοξότᾱς Κρῆτας διᾱκοσίους.

8. ἐνταῦθα ἔμειναν ἡμέρᾱς δέκα, καὶ ἐξέτασις ἐν τῇ ἐξοπλισίᾳ ἐγίγνετο καὶ ἀριθμός, καὶ ἐγένοντο ὀκτακισχίλιοι καὶ ἐξακόσιοι.

9. ἐνταῦθα τὸν ἐγκέφαλον τοῦ φοίνῑκος πρῶτον ἔφαγον οἱ στρατιῶται.

10. αἰρήσομαι οὖν ὑμᾶς καὶ οὔποτε ἐρεῖ οὐδεὶς ὡς (that) ἐγὼ τὴν τῶν βαρβάρων φιλίᾱν εἱλόμην.
    οὐδεὶς - In Greek the negative is doubled; in English we should render, never shall anybody say.

S617.
1. The army asked Cyrus for four months' pay.
2. He had more than forty cavalrymen in his force.
3. But another general also was there on board the ships with seven hundred heavy-armed men.
4. The king was said to have six thousand cavalrymen.
5. He proceeded thence three stages, fifteen parasangs, to the river Euphrates, which is four stades in width.

S618. Numbers of the Opposing Forces.
ἐνταῦθα δὴ ἐν τῇ ἐξοπλισίᾳ ἀριθμὸς ἐγένετο τῶν μὲν Ἐλλήνων
ἀσπὶς μῡρίᾱ καὶ τετρακοσίᾱ, πελτασταὶ δὲ δισχίλιοι καὶ πεντακόσιοι,
τῶν δὲ μετὰ Kύρου βαρβάρων δέκα μῡριάδες καὶ ἅρματα δρεπανηφόρα
ἀμφὶ τὰ εἴκοσι. τῶν δὲ πολεμίων ἐλέγοντο εἶναι ἑκατὸν καὶ εἴκοσι
μῡριάδες καὶ ἅρματα δρεπανηφόρα διᾱκόσια. ἄλλοι δὲ ἦσαν
ἑξακισχίλιοι ἱππεῖς, ὧν Ἀρταγέρσης ἠρχεν˙ οὖτοι δ᾽ αὖ πρὸ αὐτοῦ
βασιλέως τεταγμένοι ἦσαν. τοῦ δὲ βασιλέως στρατεύματος ἦσαν

ἐγένετο: was found to be.
ἀσπὶς . . . τετρακοσίᾱ: literally, 10,400 shield, just as we say a thousand horse.
ἄλλοι: besides.
αὖ: moreover.
τοῦ: with στρατεύματος.
