Lesson LIX - Comparison of Adjectives

S541. Most adjectives add τερος to the stem to form the comparative, and τατος to form the superlative.

POSITIVE
πιστός (πιστο) faithful
πολέμιος (πολεμιο) hostile
ἀσφαλής (ἀσφαλεσ) safe

COMPARATIVE
πιστότερος more faithful
πολεμιώτερος more hostile
ἀσφαλέστερος more safe

SUPERLATIVE
πιστότατος most faithful
πολεμιώτατος most hostile
ἀσφαλέστατος safest

S542. When the penult of stems in ο is long by nature, or the vowel of the penult is followed by two consonants, the stem remains unchanged; otherwise ο is lengthened to ω. For the declension, see 750.

S543. Some adjectives, chiefly in υς and ρος, are compared by changing these endings to ῑων and ιστος.

POSITIVE
ἡδύς, sweet
κακός, bad
αἰσχρός, shameful

COMPARATIVE
ἡδ-ιών more sweet
κακίων worse
αἰσχίων more shameful

SUPERLATIVE.
ἥδιστος most sweet
κάκιστος worst
ἀίσχιστος most shameful

S544. Learn the declension of ἡδίεω in 752.

S545. Adjectives of the comparative degree take the genitive.
Thus, οὗτοι κακίονες εἰσι τῶν ἄλλων. Τhese are greater cowards than the others.

S546. Adjectives in the superlative may be followed by the partitive genitive.

Thus, πέμπει τῶν πελταστῶν τοὺς ἰσχῡροτάτους. Ηe sends the strongest of the light infantry.

S547. The superlative may express simply a very high degree of the quality.

Thus, πολεμιώτατος ἦν βασιλεὺς τοῖς Ἕλλησι. Τhe king was very hostile to the Greeks.
