Lesson XXXV - Contract Verbs in the Subjunctive

S339. Learn the conjugation of the present subjunctive active, middle, and passive of τῑμάω in 781, of ποιέω in 782, and of δηλόω in 783.

S340. Observe that
(1) α + ω = ω; α + η = ᾱ; a + ῃ = ᾳ;
(2) ε + ω = ω; ε + η = η; ε + ῃ = ῃ;
(3) ο + ω = ω; ο + η = ω; ο + ῃ = οι;

S341. Vocabulary.
ἀμαχεί, ( negative + μάχη), adverb, without fighting.
ἀργύριον, ου, τό, (compare ἀργυροῦς), silver money, money.
ἐθέλω, ἐθελήσω, ἠθέλησα, ἠθέληκα, be willing, wish.
ἕπομαι (σεπ), ἕψομαι, ἑσπόμην,follow, accompany.
κατάγω, bring back, restore.
λοιπός, ή, όν, (compare λείπω), remaining; with the article, the rest.
νῦν, adverb, now, just now.
παρακαλέω, call to one's side, summon.
συμπορευομαι, accompany.
φυγάς, άδος, ὁ, (compare φεύγω), fugitive, exile.

S342.
1. ἐὰν δὲ τοὺς στρατιώτᾱς ἀδικῇ, οὐκ ἐθελήσομεν ἕπεσθαι.

2. φοβοῦνται μὴ τοὺς Κύρου φίλους πειρᾶσθε κακῶς ποιεῖν.

3. ἐὰν δὲ τούτους νῑκῶμεν, πάντες ἕψονται.

4. ἐρωτῶμεν τὸν ἄγγελον εἰ τὸ ἀργύριον ἔχει.

5. φοβεῖται μὴ πειρῶνται κατάγειν τοὺς φυγάδας.

6. ἐν τῷ φανερῷ λέξει ἵνα πᾶσι δηλοῖ τί (what) ἐν νῷ ἔχει.

7. ἐὰν τὰ στράτευμα ἀποχωρῇ τῆς νυκτός, ἕψονται οἱ πολέμιοι.

8. ἦν δὲ τοὺς ἄλλους στρατιώτᾱς παρακαλῆτε, πειράσονται πάντες αγαθοὶ εἶναι.
εἶναι, to be.

9. ἦν δὲ Κῦρος ἐᾷ τὸν Κλέαρχον τοὺς στρατιώτᾱς ἔχει, οὐκέτι συμπορεύσονται οἱ ἄλλοι στρατηγοί.

10. ἐὰν νῦν τοὺς φίλους παρακαλῶμεν, ἀμαχεὶ τὴν λοιπὴν ὁδὸν πορευσόμεθα.
ὁδὸν A cognate accusative.

S343.
1. Let us ask Cyrus what he intends.
2. He fears that the troops will demand their pay.
3. Let us set forth, soldiers, against the Cilicians.
4. With the help of the gods, let us conquer the enemy.
with the help of, συν.
5. We fear that the soldiers may wrong our allies.

S344. The real Object of the Expedition is disclosed.
ἐνταῦθα μένουσιν ἡμέρᾱς πέντε, καὶ τοῖς στρατηγοῖς τοῖς
Ἑλληνικοῖς Κῦρος λέγει ὅτι ἡ ὁδὸς ἔσται πρὸς τὸν
Αρταξέρξην εἰς Βαβυλῶνα˙ καὶ κελεύει αὐτοὺς λέγειν ταῦτα
τοῖς στρατιώταις καὶ πείθειν ἕπεσθαι. οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται
χαλεπαίνουσι τοῖς στρατηγοῖς, καὶ οὐκ ἐθέλουσιν ἕπεσθαι
ἐὰν μὴ Κῦρος αὐτοῖς χρήματα διδῷ ὥσπερ καὶ πρότερον.
ταῦτα οἱ στρατηγοὶ Κύρῳ ἔλεγον. ὁ δ᾽ ὑπισχνείται
στρατιώτῃ ἑκάστῳ πέντε ἀργυρίου μνᾶς ἐπὴν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα
ἥκωσι. τὸ μὲν δὴ Ἐλληνικὸν οὕτως ἐπείσθη.

στρατηγοις: dative of indirect object after χαλεπαινουσι (860).
διδῷ: give, third singular present subjunctive of δίδωμι.
πρότερον: previously, an adverb in the comparative (compare πρό).
ἐπήν: whenever, followed by the subjunctive, like ἐὰν.
